Talking to Strangers

A hidden gem of eighties American independent filmmaking, Talking to Strangers follows a young writer (Ken Gruz) and his encounters around Baltimore over the course of a single day in nine unedited shots, each filmed in single take. Featuring precise camerawork and philosophical dialogue that recall Stranger Than Paradise and Slacker, the formally ambitious debut feature of Béla Tarr collaborator Rob Tregenza has earned praise from the likes of Jonathan Rosenbaum and Jean-Luc Godard, who called it “remarkable and at times astonishing.” A 4K scan of Talking to Strangers done by Colorlab for a retrospective of Tregenza’s work at MoMA in 2023 allows a new generation of moviegoers to rediscover this long unavailable and rarely screened film.
